NEET 2027 Eligibility: Age Limit, Attempts and Marks Needed

Exam info19 May 20266 min readBy the GetReadyForNEET teaching team

Eligibility worries stop a surprising number of students before they start, and most of those worries are outdated. The upper age limit is gone, the attempt limit is gone, and droppers face no penalty of any kind. Here is exactly who can write NEET 2027.

The rules at a glance

CriterionRule
Minimum age17 years by 31 December 2027
Upper age limitNone. Removed by NMC
Number of attemptsNo limit
QualificationClass 12 (or appearing) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English
Minimum PCB marks50% general · 45% general PwD · 40% SC, ST and OBC
NationalityIndian citizens, NRIs, OCIs and foreign nationals can apply

Age: one floor, no ceiling

You must turn 17 on or before 31 December of the admission year. There is no upper age limit: NMC removed it, so working professionals and late starters can appear. For NEET 2027 that means candidates born on or before 31 December 2010 meet the age floor.

Attempts: unlimited

There is no cap on attempts. A dropper year, or even two, carries no eligibility penalty. What matters is using that year well, which is exactly what the dropper plan for NEET 2027 is about.

Class 12 requirements

  • You need Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Biotechnology) with English as a core subject in Class 11 and 12.
  • Students appearing for Class 12 in 2027 can apply; admission just requires passing before counselling.
  • Minimum aggregate in PCB: 50% for general, 45% for general PwD, 40% for SC, ST and OBC candidates. These apply to your board exam, not to NEET itself.
  • Open school and private candidates have been allowed in recent years following court orders, but rules here have shifted before. Check the official bulletin for your year if this applies to you.

Eligibility vs qualifying: two different bars

Being eligible lets you write the exam. Qualifying means crossing the NEET percentile cut off (50th percentile for general candidates, 40th for reserved categories), which is what makes you eligible for counselling. And getting a seat usually needs far more than just qualifying. The full picture is in the NEET cut off guide and the counselling guide.
